Cañada de Gómez, Santa Fe, Argentina
From San Salvador to Cañada de Gómez, in the Argentine province of Santa Fe, the journey takes you 1300 km along roads running parallel with the River Paraguay, until it is high-jacked by the mighty Paraná. The heat and humidity decrease as you head south and, on taking a right at Rosario, you enter into a different world – The Pampa. Flat to the horizon, with fields populated with wheat, corn, soya and, of course, cattle. The humidity decreases as the roads stretch west in straight lines as far as the eye can see. Before the roads, of course, there were the railways, and the city of Cañada de Gómez received its station in 1886 – along with the British railway workers to both manage and work on it.

From this group of workers, along with local enthusiasts, on 5th June 1914, emerged Everton Athletic Club. Over the years the Club has merged with neighbouring institutions. The first, in 1926, was with Talleres Club Athlético (from the engineering workshop for Central Argentine Railways) resulting in Club Everton Central Argentino. A further merger took place in 1946 with Club Atlético Argentino Juniors giving us Atletico Everton Argentino Juniors. The final merger took place in 1993 with Club Deportivo Olimpia. The latter’s strength lay on the basketball court while the former´s was on the football pitch. The ensuing name – Asociación Deportiva Everton Olimpia (ADEO) retained the colours of each former institution – red, white, and black stripes for “Everton” and white for Olimpia, to be used for football and basketball respectively.
